CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Defensive end Hilee Taylor scooped up a fumbled snap and ran 37 yards for a touchdown, which enabled the Blue Team to tie the score. Later, Antwain Carey scored from 1-yard out to give the Blue a 14-7 victory in North Carolina's annual Spring Game on Saturday.

“We won,” exclaimed John Bunting following the game.

Those expecting a West Coast offensive explosion likely left a little discouraged, as the combined squads managed just 144 rushing yards on 55 attempts, and four quarterbacks completed just 13 of 27 passes for 110 yards and no touchdowns.

But despite a rain-soaked second half, the game was played with limited errors; and perhaps more importantly – no injuries.

“These quarterbacks are two guys that are going to be competing throughout summer camp,” Bunting said. “There’s no telling how it’s going to work out, but it’s fun to see that competition and both getting better every day.

Barrington Edwards rushed for 58 yards on 11 carries, while the trio of R.J. Waters (28 yards), Richie Rich (25) and Antwain Carey (11, TD) displayed promise as well. Bobby Rome's 1-yard touchdown run, his only carry of the game, put the White team ahead 7-0 in the first quarter.

“Barrington Edwards had a good day running the football – that’s what I expect him to do – and that will be another dynamic to our football program if he can continue play like that and do the right things off the field,” Bunting said. “I anticipate that he’s starting to get it. That would be good for us.”

QBs Joe Dailey (8-of-15 for 65 yards passing), Cam Sexton (2-of-3 for 13 yards), and others, were shared by both teams in an standard game format subject to impromptu changes by the coaching staff.

Points after touchdowns were 'gimmies,' and special teams plays were limited.

Jesse Holley led all receivers with 42 yards on three catches. Brandon Tate had three catches for 19 yards and Brooks Foster had a 15-yard reception.

Defensively, Mark Paschal recorded a game-high 10 tackles for the White squad. Taylor, Brian Rackley, Quinton Person and Kyndraus Guy each had a sack. Victor Worsley led the Blue with seven stops.

“And of course it was a great day for us recruiting," Bunting said. “There were a number of really good recruits out there before, during and after the game. We’ve got to keep doing a great job there.”
