DAYTON, Ohio – Here are a few notes on North Carolina’s NCAA Tournament history to chew on while you wait for the tenth-ranked Tar Heels (22-7) to face off against Murray State (24-6) tonight at approximately 9:40.

North Carolina…

  • has reached an NCAA-record 16 Final Fours, including at least one in each of the last seven decades (1946, 1957, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1972, 1977, 1981, 1982, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2005).

  • has appeared in 124 NCAA Tournament games. Only Kentucky (137) has played in more.

  • is second in NCAA Tournament wins with an 89-36 all-time record. Kentucky is first with 96; Duke is third with 84 and UCLA is fourth with 80.

  • has advanced to the Sweet 16 on 20 occasions. NCAA Sweet 16 records began in 1975, the first year a team had to win at least one game to reach the regional semifinals. Kentucky is the only other school with 20 Sweet 16’s.

  • made 27 consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament from 1975-2001 – the longest streak in history. Arizona’s 22 straight appearances (active) is the second-longest such streak.

  • has won at least one game in 22 of its last 23 tourneys (Weber St., 1999).

  • is playing in the NCAA Tournament for the 38th time, tied for second with UCLA behind Kentucky (47).

  • has played 10 games (6-4) this season against seven teams in the 2006 NCAA field – No. 1 seed Duke; No. 4 seeds Boston College and Illinois; No. 8 seeds Kentucky and Arizona; No. 10 seed N.C. State; and No. 15 seed Davidson.

  • has played one NCAA Tournament game in Dayton prior to this season, a 89-64 first-round loss to Alabama on March 13, 1976. Tommy LaGarde led the Tar Heels with 22 points and Mitch Kupchak had 12 rebounds.

    UNC Coach Roy Williams…

  • is taking his 17th consecutive team to the tournament – 14 times with Kansas and three with UNC – the second longest active streak in the country (Lute Olsen 1985-present).

  • has 41 all-time NCAA Tournament wins, fourth among all active coaches and seventh all-time.

  • has won .732 percent of his NCAA games, fourth-best among active coaches.

  • has reached the national championship game three times (1991 and 2003 at Kansas, and 2005 at UNC).

  • is the 12th head coach in history to lead two different teams to the Final Four.

  • has more Final Four appearances than any other coach, except John Wooden, UCLA; Dean Smith, UNC; Mike Krzyzewski, Duke; Denny Crum, Louisville; and Adolph Rupp, Kentucky.

  • is the fifth UNC coach to reach the Final Four, joining Ben Carnevale, Frank McGuire, Dean Smith and Bill Guthridge.
