LISTEN (3:11)

This is a marathon race between now and September 2nd for starting quarterback. Can you talk about your initial impressions?

Well, the impressions we have--let's talk about the process or the journey, since we don't play until September, so our goal for spring is to have 15 practices where we go out and improve upon each practice. That's the goal. From practice one to practice two we saw improvement, which is very encouraging. Now, we want to go from practice two to practice three and improve some more. So, I think as an offensive staff we were encouraged by what we saw today. Hey, obviously there are a lot of things we need to get better at and work on, which we will do.

How are the guys picking up the terminology?

They are doing a good job. We've got great kids here who are working hard at it. They are doing a very good job.

As I said, it's a marathon and you talked about the process. A lot can change between now and then. Any indicators that one guy is a little ahead of the other?

You know what, I think both Joe [Dailey] and Cam [Sexton]--or Cam and Joe, however you want to say it--I'm very pleased with their preparation, I'm pleased with their progress in two days. They both have a lot of upside. I'm very excited to see where we'll be come September with those two young men.

Are there any indications that Cam is having any problems with the injury he suffered last spring?

I haven't noticed anything.

Do you see a chemistry between the quarterbacks and receivers, and how much influence do you have over that?

Well, in two days, I think what you've seen is an offensive unit that is very enthusiastic. Our guys are very eager to learn, they are very eager to get better. I think what you see out here is a unit that has some togetherness.

Speaking of togetherness, you've worked with Coach Weber. How much does that help?

That helps tremendously because we've worked together and we understand the system together. Any time you've been with someone in the past, you know what to expect out of each other. The thing that I'm very pleased with is that we have a great offensive staff here.

When you look at Dave Brock and Andre' Powell, and John Gutekunst, and then you have guys like John Dunn and Arthur Smith who are helping on the offensive side of the ball, I feel very fortunate to have those guys on the offensive staff. Not only do Mark and I have some history together, but the other coaches--and Gary Tranquill told me when I took this job--that there is a very strong offensive staff here. And that there is.
