Trailing by one point, Ellington took the inbounds pass, weaved through defenders and hit a 17-footer with 2.6 seconds remaining to beat Neumann-Goretti, 65-64, in a game televised nationally on ESPN2.
But as crunch time went to bold-face type and then to capital letters and then a few exclamation points were added, it was Ellington, the 6-4 swingman headed for North Carolina, who earned the ultimate laurel.
