Women's hoops get first commitment for 2003

Posted May 8, 2002

Forestview's McArver commits to Heels.

A player IC has been watching closely for the past year, Mary Hall McArver, committed to Carolina last night.

McArver, a 5-9 junior at Forestview, averaged 19 points a game last season, missing the first part of the season with recovery from knee surgery - a knee injury sustained over the past summer at UNC.

She picked UNC over N.C. State and Virginia Tech.

“She felt really good about the program there,” Forestview coach Lynn Rhymer told the Gaston Gazette. “She just felt good and comfortable, so she felt like that was where she wanted to be.”

The speedy guard is an elusive scorer - I watched her score 19 points in a half last summer against one of the best private school teams, Providence Day with Jill Ingram. The 19 points were her entire team's scoring output that half and McArver just could not be stopped - she hit three three-pointers and a pile of driving layups.

Her strong ability to penetrate and finish plus a great outside shot makes her hard to defend.

She was conference player of the year the past two years and a 3-A Miss Basketball finalist.

She is the first UNC commitment for the 2003 class.

More on the commitment from the Gaston Gazette
