CHAPEL HILL --- Former University of North Carolina basketball star Jerry Stackhouse (UNC' 99) has announced a new scholarship for college-bound students in the name of his parents, George and Minnie Stackhouse.
Stackhouse, currently an NBA All-Star with the Detroit Pistons, played two years of college basketball at the University of North Carolina. He entered the NBA Draft after winning National Player of the Year honors in 1994-95 and leading UNC to the Final Four. He earned his degree from UNC four years later and participated in Commencement exercises in December 1999.
The scholarships are need-based awards that will be given to two college bound students -- one member of the Kinston High School boys basketball team and one member of the Kinston High School girls basketball team. The students must be in good academic standing and display great citizenship and sportsmanship at all times.
Stackhouse starred at Kinston High School in the early 1990s.

THE GEORGE AND MINNIE STACKHOUSE SCHOLARSHIP
What: This scholarship is a contribution from Jerry Stackhouse to his former high school (Kinston High) on behalf of his parents, George and Minnie Stackhouse, in appreciation for the love and support that they have given him. He hopes that this will provide needed assistance to two student-athletes as they attempt to earn college degrees.
Criteria: This need-based scholarship will be awarded to two college bound students: one member of the Kinston High School boys basketball team and one member of the Kinston High School girls basketball team. The students must be in good academic standing and display great citizenship and sportsmanship at all times.
Selection Committee: Kinston High School principal, athletic director and the head coaches of the boys and girls basketball teams.
Amount/Terms: The total amount of the scholarship is $4,000.00. Each recipient will collect $1,000.00 each year that they enroll in college for a total of four years.
