CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- With offensive coordinator Gary Tranquill retiring after this season, head coach John Bunting said Thursday that he expects to promote a member of his current coaching staff to become Tranquill's succesor.

On his Thursday night radio show, Bunting highlighted offensive line coach Hal Hunter, wide receivers coach Dave Brock and running backs/special teams coach Andre' Powell. The UNC head coach said that, barring something unforeseen, he expects his new offensive coordinator will come from this group.

Hunter is in his fourth season at North Carolina -- and his 21st season overall in the coaching ranks. His offensive line in 2004 finished second in the league in sacks allowed and the Tar Heel offense averaged 176.2 yards rushing per game, the most since since 1994, and were second in the league in total offense at 390.7 yards per game. Prior to UNC, Hunter was the offensive coordinator at Indiana, leading the Hoosiers to two straight seasons in which the team's total offense finished in the national Top 20.

Brock came to UNC this past offseason from Temple, where he'd spent three seasons as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He is expected to become the quarterbacks coachat UNC next season, as Tranquill has served that role at Carolina.

Powell, in his fifth season at UNC, led the ACC's second best running game in 2004. Before joining Bunting's staff, he'd coached running backs and wide receivers at Virginia.
