'Jaws' Set To Return

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – All systems are go for North Carolina senior Jarwarski Pollock to return to practice this week, play significant snaps versus Virginia on Saturday and, at some point in the near future; become the Tar Heels’ all-time leading receiver.

“We expect him to have his normal role on Saturday,” John Bunting said.

Pollock underwent arthroscopic surgery on Oct. 7 to repair a minor cartilage tear in his left knee, just one day before the Louisville game.

“It’s about 90 percent,” Pollock said. “I just need to get comfortable cutting on it. That’s basically it. Everything else is fine.”

Pollock will wear a knee brace in the Virginia game.

The Tar Heels (2-3, 1-1 ACC) hope to halt a three-game losing streak to the Cavaliers (4-2, 2-2).

Pollock needs only six catches to surpass Na Brown (1995-98) as Carolina’s all-time leading receiver. Pollock is currently ranked second at UNC with 160 catches for 1,764 yards.

“Jarwarski is a student of the game,” Bunting said. “I hope other players will follow his method for studying and learning the game. That’s so important in the passing game – to understand how your routes fit the scheme.”

Pollock has already established the school single-season receiving record with 71 receptions in 2003. He has averaged more than four catches per game throughout his entire career.

“For a little guy like that to get the record shows you about his makeup,” Bunting said of the 5-foot-8, 170 pound, one-time Prop 48 prospect. “It’s a tribute to his consistency. He’s a great kid.

“It’s extremely significant that he came in here and did what he did when a lot of people didn’t think he would get it done.”

Pollock is set to complete all of his credits for graduation this fall.

“It’s been very satisfying,” Pollock said. “I don’t feel like I have to prove anybody wrong, but it will be very satisfying to have the record and my degree.”
