'Late Night' Is Tonight!

Posted Oct 14, 2005

The start of the 2005-06 North Carolina basketball season begins tonight!

"Late Night with Roy Williams," which will include skits, a team scrimmage and the unveiling of the 2004-05 national championship banner, is set for Friday, Oct. 14 -- but will no longer take place late at night. A change in NCAA rules has allowed the season-opening event to begin earlier in the evening.

With free admission and open seating, the Dean E. Smith Center doors will open at 5:30 p.m. The UNC-GT volleyball match begins at 6:30 p.m. and the 'Late Night' activities are scheduled to start at about 9 p.m. The school is asking fans to be in their seats by no later than 8:45 p.m.

Admission is free and park and ride buses will run from University Mall and the Friday Center.

Kenny Smith, one of the greatest point guards in Carolina basketball history, will serve as the host for Late Night with Roy Williams, the annual season-opening event for Tar Heel basketball.

Smith, a 10-year NBA veteran, including a stint with the Houston Rockets when he was the starting point guard on the 1994 and 1995 world championship teams, is the popular studio analyst on TNT's NBA coverage, where he is paired with Charles Barkley. Last month he assembled an all-star roster of NBA players for a charity game in Houston that benefited Hurricane Katrina relief.
