John Bunting Radio Show Quotes

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina head coach John Bunting touched on a number of topics during his live call-in show on Thursday evening. Here are some excerpts of what he said ...

“I knew we discovered a lot of things this week, in particular with our field goal kicker. Connor Barth was in my office early Monday and wanted to watch the tape. He said he thought he had an idea as to why he missed a couple of those field goals. He watched and he told me he thought he had been hurrying himself as he was approaching the ball. He was leaving as the snap was taking place. He was losing sight and losing focus on hitting the meat of the ball. We looked at all of last year’s field goal kicks and he came in and said that was the problem. We watched him again today. We watched the 42-yarder that beat Miami, and it’s true, he’s leaving too soon. We’ve been trying to get him to hurry up on his operation times…it’s our fault. We pushed him, and he started going too fast and he got out of sync. So, hopefully we’ve got that all fixed now because we need those field goals and he’s an excellent field goal kicker.”

“Give credit to Matt Baker and those kids keeping their composure and keeping their poise. [N.C. State] was a loud place to play. They did a good job of drowning us out with audibles and signals. But Matt and our receivers did a good job. It was our best game by our receivers. They came to play. ‘Jaws’ [Jarwarski Pollock] had a big game. Mike [Mason] makes a big play and Matt just drives them down the field. It was really great to see these kids overcome the halftime. Coming out of halftime, we feel good and all of a sudden we’re behind by 10 points. These kids did a great job coming back.”

“[Utah] is still a very good team. Their line is solid. Their backs are solid. Their quarterback was the No. 1 pick in the NFL – Alex Smith. Well, guess what? The guy back there playing now looks to me like a clone of him. But maybe he’s faster with a live arm. He can really wing it downfield. They’re wide open and they’re going to spread us out. It’s a little scary. It’s hard to practice against, because you can’t simulate it as well as they can and we don’t see it very often. So, it’s a difficult thing to prepare for and it’s going to be a long, long game against Utah in terms as making plays, tackling people, assignment football, running to the ball carrier – the pitch, the option, the shovel – you name it, they could have everything against us. And they’re defense is still pretty good, too.”
