Arnold To Start

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – According to sources close to the situation, true freshman Cooter Arnold will get the starting nod at tailback when North Carolina opens its 2005 football season at Georgia Tech on Saturday, Inside Carolina has learned.

"I think this guy's got a great future," John Bunting said of Arnold, during his Wednesday morning teleconference. "I thought he would be good, but I didn't know he would be this good. This is a great kid who's got a great future for us."

Bunting implied Arnold and sophomore Barrington Edwards (who was atop the depth chart throughout the preseason) would play, but declined to confirm who would start.

"I'm not going to touch that," Bunting said. "We're probably going to play three backs at Georgia Tech. Three backs are probably going to touch the ball."

Edwards, who transferred to UNC from Louisiana State after the 2003 season, has two pending charges for speeding in Orange County and a court date set for Sept. 20.

UNC would not confirm or deny if Edwards' pending charges had anything to do with the decision to start Arnold, or if Arnold had simply beaten out Edwards for the starting nod. A team official confirmed Edwards would travel to Atlanta with the team this weekend.

The Tar Heels and Yellow Jackets kick off at 3:30 p.m. in a game regionally televised by ABC.
