UNC athletics director Dick Baddour was confident UNC would have a surplus based on the department's expenses. He has been the school's AD since June 1997, and UNC has finished on the budget plus-side each year since 1999.

WHAT THEY'RE WORKING ON: Defense. Nine starters return, but the Tar Heels allowed 446.5 yards per game last season. Chase Page, who started 12 games in 2003 but sat out last season because of a torn tendon in his hand, should help; he'll start at left defensive tackle.
