Charlotte Gets Felton and May

Posted Jun 28, 2005

Raymond Felton and Sean May teamed up to win the national champion at UNC, and now they'll team up to play NBA ball a couple hours down the road in Charlotte. The Bobcats took Felton at No. 5 and then May at No. 13 in Tuesday's NBA Draft.

"Ray told me yesterday that he thought there may be a chance that it might happen," May said. "For me to get the opportunity to play with him [in Charlotte] is going to make my life a lot easier. It's going to be fun - it's a great fit for both of us."

After two point guards went 3rd and 4th, Charlotte, in need of a point guard, decided to take Felton with the 5th overall selection in Tuesday's NBA Draft.

A native of Latta, S.C., Felton will now be playing pro ball close to home.

"It's no pressure, I'm going to just come out and play basketball," he said. "I've been playing this game all my life and I love it. ... I'm living a dream right now."

Felton led the ACC last season with 6.9 assists per game and a three-point field goal percentage of .440 as a junior last season. He was fourth on the team in scoring with 12.9 points per game and was fourth in the ACC with 2.0 steals per game. He also received the Bob Cousy Award from the Basketball Hall of Fame as the top point guard in the country.

"Raymond Felton is ultra quick, ultra fast with the basketball," said ESPN analyst Jay Bilas. "From end to end, with the ball in his ends, I think he is the fastest player in this draft."

When asked what he'd bring to the Bobcats, Felton replied - "I bring quickness, excitement and a guy that hates to lose!"

May led the 2005 NCAA Tournament in scoring and rebounding, the first player to do so on the title-winning team since Danny Manning of Kansas in 1988. May scored 134 points (22.3 per game) and had 64 rebounds (10.7) in Carolina’s six NCAA Tournament wins. A first-team All-America, May had 26 points and 10 boards in the title game vs. the Illini. He averaged 17.5 points and 10.7 rebounds on the season, earning first-team All-ACC honors as well.

"I'm excited at the opportunity I have ahead of me," May said.

"Charlotte made out like bandits with this 13th pick to get Sean May," said ESPN analyst Jay Bilas. "Along with Andrew Bogut, the best hands of any big guy in the draft. ... He is really productive on the glass. Sean May can be a really good player in the NBA."

Bobcats president Bernie Bickerstaff found just what he was looking for in the Tar Heel duo.

"I had a terrific conversation today with Roy Williams about his players and these players embody what we want to be as a basketball team. They are quality young men," Bickerstaff said. "Raymond Felton can push the basketball, we want to play an up tempo game. We need rebounding and need to improve our basketball IQ, and that's where Sean May comes in. We found out from our workouts that he can step out and shoot the basketball, he has terrific hands and he can really go to the glass - and that's one of our weaknesses, we need help on the glass."
