Marvin Williams Goes No. 2 to Atlanta

Posted Jun 28, 2005

After only one season at North Carolina, Marvin Williams was selected, as expected, No. 2 overall by Atlanta in the NBA Draft on Tuesday night.

"He's the most unique individual I've ever been around -- to be that gifted, yet that caring, humble and appreciatve of everything," said Roy Williams. "He's just an unbelievable young man who is going to be a big time pro for a long, long time."

Williams was one of the nation's best freshmen, posting 11.3 points and 6.6 rebounds despite not starting a single game. His free-throw percentage (.847) was fourth-best in the ACC.

"The sky is the limit as far as his potential is concerned," said ESPN analyst Jay Bilas. "He's the real deal and the complete package."

Williams was asked about his reputation as a classy person, and cited both his family -- and his UNC family.

"That's just how my parents raised me," Williams said. "Going to Carolina, Coach Smith has always taught his players to be that way and Coach Williams taught us to do the same thing.

He joins a team that won only 13 games last season.

"I'll just work as hard as I can," he said.
