North Carolina swingman Rashad McCants, sidelined the past four games by an intestinal disorder, resumed practice Wednesday after receiving medical clearance by team doctors. His status for Friday's ACC Tournament quarterfinal against Maryland or Clemson remains unclear.

McCants' availability to play in the ACC Tournament won't be known until Friday at the earliest, the day that UNC will play its first game against either Maryland or Clemson. McCants is scheduled to practice again today in Chapel Hill before UNC leaves for Washington.

They didn't sign up for 8-20. Nobody signs up for 8-20 at North Carolina. They were members of a typical Tar Heel recruiting class, maybe a little less-touted than most, but they were players who had every right to expect all the benefits that traditionally came with a UNC scholarship: top-10 rankings, 20-win seasons, NCAA tournament games and national title hopes. Instead, Jawad Williams, Jackie Manuel and Melvin Scott got 8-20, during their freshman season three years ago.

Last summer, North Carolina forward Sean May made the commitment to turn his body into a rebounding machine. Often ridiculed by opposing fans for his pudgy appearance, May hit the weight room with an unyielding resolve, determined to take his game to the next level. It started with a promise he made to himself and continued with a challenge he accepted from coach Roy Williams.

Only three years removed from an 8-20 disaster, the Tar Heels and their fans can sit back and enjoy - in the words of folksy coach Roy Williams - a figurative hot fudge sundae with nuts and a Coca-Cola. But as sweet as this season has been thus far, there is an annoyingly bitter aftertaste Williams and his players just can't cleanse from their collective palate. Despite going 14-2 in the league, they didn't beat Wake Forest.

Only one team will cut down the nets when the ACC Tournament concludes Sunday afternoon in Washington D.C. But between now and then, every team will be trying to make the cut. Beginning with today's noon tipoff between Maryland and Clemson and continuing for four tension-filled days, even more than the tournament title will hang in the balance each time two teams take to the MCI Center court.
