Heels Offer NC ATH

Josh Adams apparently wasn't the only Junior Day attendee to receive his first scholarship offer Saturday. The North Carolina coaching staff also offered Bruce Carter of Havelock (N.C.).

"I think he was surprised they offered him," stated Havelock head coach Charlie Smith. "They've been recruiting him since the early fall and they did see him play in a playoff game.

"He's a very realistic person, but I think he feels relieved that he's already got one offer on the table."

Although early, Smith believes the Tar Heels have a leg up on the competition for Carter's services.

"He's very interested in Carolina," remarked Smith. "He was very impressed with the coaching staff; he spent some time with Coach [John] Bunting Saturday.

"He's very, very impressed with the facilities. He's encouraged also to see a program that started to turn it around a little bit towards the end of last year."

Carter plays quarterback for Havelock, but is being recruited as an athlete by North Carolina with the possibility of playing tailback or safety. With legit 4.50-second forty-speed, the 6-foot-3, 205-pounder's athletic ability makes it hard to project his position at the next level.

"Carter is very athletic, deceivingly fast, and exceptionally strong," explained Smith. "He's a big play guy, particularly at quarterback. He can make something out of nothing just on his shear athletic ability."

While leading Havelock to a 6-6 record, Carter scored 13 all-purpose touchdowns. He recorded around 700 yards through the air and another 850 on the ground.
