UNC-Duke Postgame: Doherty's Press Conference

UNC-Duke Postgame: Doherty's Press Conference

Matt Doherty

Opening Remarks:

"First, I have to compliment Duke. They have a great team. They play great defense and get a lot of steals. That really hurt us. I thought we did some good things, but you can't have 14 turnovers in the first half. And that's really a credit to Duke. They had 22 points off of turnovers to our two, and 21 more shots than we did. That's a credit to their pressure defense.

"The toughest thing now is we've got to move on. We have a real quick turnaround. It's tough scheduling. We've got a game at 1:00 on Saturday, so we really have to put this game behind us as quickly as possible and move on.

"Great atmosphere. I appreciate the crowd. They were awesome – at the end chanting 'Tar Heels'. It was a great college basketball environment. We just didn't play as well as we would have liked, and, again, a lot of that credit goes to Duke."

Could you talk about Brian Morrison's performance?

"I thought Brian really played well. Brian has the legs to beat people off the dribble, and we were trying to spread the floor and drive it. Brian did a good job with the penetration, and I thought he made some pretty good decisions for the most part. I was pleased, especially after what happened at Clemson. I thought he really responded. He's never hung his head. He's been positive, and I've been positive with him. I give him a clean slate every day."

From your vantage point, when it was 38-30 late in the first half, what then happened the remainder of the first half and the outset of the second half?

"I don't know any specifice plays, but I just think the turnovers [hurt us]. We did take some bad shots. I thought there were a couple of bad shots. A bad shot is like a turnover. They get it and go.

"They are fast. Jawad scored on a lay-up, and then on the other end Dahntay Jones is laying it in. We've got to to a better job of getting back in transition.

"They came out in the second half, and we tried to make sure they didn't get a run on us. They came out like they have in the past, and all of a sudden a 13-point lead is 15, 20, and then 25. They are a tough team. It's hard to take the ball from them. We [forced] six turnovers. Their guard play is pretty good.

"I thought we kept them off the foul line. That was a big concern of mine. That stat that jumps out to me – and they are related – are 25 turnovers to six, and them end up getting 21 more shots than we did. If you say at the beginning of the game, 'OK, you have 21 shots against our defense, and then we'll play,' that's a pretty tough hole [to climb out of]."
