North Carolina (1-1) vs. Tennessee (1-0)
Maui, Hawaii -- Lahaina Civic Center
9:30 p.m., ESPN
In the First Round: UT knocked off Stanford thanks to some solid defense and 21 points from Scooter McFadgon. C.J. Watson scored 16 for Tennessee while Brandon Crump added 10, as the Vols shot 48 percent from the field (24 of 50). Stanford connected on 42 percent (24 of 57). The Vols forced 24 Cardinal turnovers while committing 20 miscues. Watson recorded a game-high five steals and McFadgon grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Last Season: The Vols failed to win a road game last year and finished 15-14, bowing out in the first round of the NIT with a loss at George Mason.
Finally Experienced: Tennessee has felt the growing pains of youth over the past few seasons, and like Carolina, didn’t have a senior scholarship player on last year’s club. This year, though, seniors Scooter McFadgon and Brandon Crump lead a deep squad that returns 90.3 percent of its scoring and 90.2 percent of its rebounding from a year ago. The only scholarship losses from last year’s squad were transfers John Winchester and Boomer Herndon, and redshirt junior Justin Albrecht, who was granted a fifth year of eligibility but decided not to play this season.
Star Power: McFadgon, Crump, and C.J. Watson all received preseason conference accolades from the league’s coaches. McFadgon (whose 91.2 percent from the free throw line in ‘03-04 broke a 35-year-old school record, was second best in SEC history, and fifth in the nation, while he was also the SEC's fourth leading scorer) was named first team All-SEC, while Crump and Watson (second in the SEC in assists a year ago, and his 5.3 apg career average is 3rd best in UT history) were voted second team All-SEC.
Put a Hand in his Face: Freshman Chris Lofton was the Vols’ second leading scorer in exhibition games, making 63.6 percent of his three pointers in the two contests. Lofton’s deadly range earned him Kentucky’s Mr. Basketball award last season as a high school senior.
