Quotables:

"Coach Williams is someone in this profession that I have a great deal of respect for and when we watch his teams play, you know their transition is pretty lethal, especially if you don't take care of the basketball. We have a lot of new people and for us right now a lot of it is just defining roles for our own players. I'm hoping that we can execute offensively, and take care of the basketball and get good shots. I'm not sure if that's going to happen, but hopefully we'll try and make it more of a half-court game." -- BYU head coach Steve Cleveland

"We're not as excited about being here probably as we would be if we had played better on Friday night against Santa Clara. I would have been a heck of a lot more excited. For us the preparation of turning right back around after not playing very well and not playing good against Santa Clara…they did some great things and we congratulated them. But there is some tension in our place. We've had some long meetings and some long practices, but only for one day, because you do have to turn around since we did play Friday night." -- UNC head coach Roy Williams

PREGAME NOTES

Last Season: Led by center Rafael Araujo (who was a lottery pick in April's NBA Draft), BYU went 21-9 (10-4 MWC), losing in the first round of the NCAAs to Syracuse. Five significant contributors have graduated from that team.

Starpower: Mike Hall, who was all-conference last year and the conference's Defensive Player of the Year, is the top returning scorer (12.8 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 1.4 spg)

Sharpshooter: The Cougars expected to be without last year's top three-point shooter, Mike Rose, because of missionary service -- but that was called off, so Rose and his 46% from beyond the arc returns.

Remember Me?: Garner Meads played in the 2000 McDonald's All-American Game. Injuries and missionary service have delayed his career, but he's now a 23-year-old sophomore and the Cougars will rely on him for bigger production this season.

Endless Height: Araujo's departure leaves a void in the paint, but the Cougars will have no shortage of height this season. They return 6-9, 250-pound starter Jared Jensen, redshirt sophomore Derek Dawes (6-11, 275) is back and coach Steve Cleveland added three heralded low-post players in a Top 20 recruiting class -- David Burgess (6-10, 265), Chris Miles (6-10, 225) and Trent Plaisted (6-10, 220).

Experimental Rules: The NCAA will be testing out three experimental rules this week in Maui -- 1) The three-point line has been moved back nine inches 2) the free-throw lane has been widened 3) a two-foot arc from under the basket (similar to the NBA) was added to assist with charge/block calls.
