DURHAM, N.C.--Just minutes after North Carolina defeated Duke on the football field at Wallace Wade Stadium, 40-17, UNC Chancellor James Moeser and Athletic Director Dick Baddour announced a recommendation for a two-year extension to head coach John Bunting's contract, which currently has three years remaining.

"We've been evaluating this team over the course of the year," Moeser said. "This team has had some adversity, but it has had tremendous resilience, courage, tenacity, and I am very pleased to announce right now that immediately Dick Baddour and I plan to ask the Board of Trustees to give John Bunting a two-year extension on his contract.

"We believe in this man, we believe in this program. It's headed in the right direction, and we are going to be competitive at the very highest level. I'm extremely proud of John, his staff, and this team. It really represents Carolina at its best."

"Absolutely, this program is in great hands," Baddour said. "We have a lot of confidence in John. We want to win the ACC Championship, and we know we can do it under his leadership and with these student-athletes and this coaching staff."

But as has been his nature all year, even in the face of swirling rumors that he may not return as coach of the Tar Heels next season, Bunting remain even-keeled and focused on the task at hand.

"Well, it's most important that we are able to win this football game," Bunting said, "and I'm really proud of the way this team has bounced back every single week. It's great to have these two guys next to me right now. It's special to me--real special. I love this university--always have, always will.

"It's been tough, real tough, but thanks to a great staff, thanks to a great team and ton of support outside of our building, on campus, and out to our fans. All of our fans here today meant something really, really special. It's all very exciting right now, and right now we will celebrate and then get back to work."
