In the end, Danny Green just couldn’t turn down the tradition and the lure of North Carolina.

Despite an aggressive campaign by Big East schools Pittsburgh and St. John’s to keep the versatile 6-5, 200-pound St. Mary’s (N.Y.) swingman close to home, Green committed to the Tar Heels on Friday evening, making the announcement at a press conference held shortly after 7:30 p.m.

"I chose North Carolina because I felt more comfortable with Coach (Roy) Williams and Coach (Steve) Robinson. I've watched them since I was a little kid."

"This is a dream come true for me," he added. "It's wonderful and crazy that all this is happening"

Green isn’t flashy, but he simply gets things done. He’s not a lights-out shooter, but he more than keeps opposing defenses honest. He’s not the quickest wing in the country, but he can get into the lane without a problem and finish.

Basically, he’s solid – but not spectacular.

Green emerged as a national name at the ABCD Camp in July when he led all players in the camp’s rating system and earned co-MVP honors. That’s when North Carolina assistant Steve Robinson first began to notice Green.

Roy Williams came in and basically sealed the deal with an in-home visit this past week.

“The Carolina in-home visit went very well,” said New York Panthers coach Gary Charles. “It was key. Roy Williams did as good a job with the in-home visit as I’ve ever been involved with.”

Green said, "It was a pretty hard decision. It took me a little while and was a slow process, but when I narrowed down the schools, they came out on top."

The Tar Heels stepped up their efforts and have now added Green to a Class of 2005 that already includes guards Bobby Frasor and Marcus Ginyard as well as power forward Tyler Hansbrough.

Now North Carolina coach Roy Williams will wait for the decision of 6-8, 245-pound Alabama native Richard Hendrix, who is debating between the home-state Alabama Crimson Tide and UNC. Seven-footer Andrew Bynum out of New Jersey is also in the mix.

Green has averaged 18 points per game over the past two seasons under coach Tim Cluess at St. Mary’s. He also has put up 10 boards, 6 assists and 4 blocks per game while playing the point, but the coach said he’ll move to the wing this season.

"He's very different,” Cluess said. “Most guys do something extremely well and something extremely poor, but he's good in every area. He's more like an old-school player and that's what makes him so special."

“Danny does everything well,” Charles said. “He's a poor man's Ron Artest." -

An intelligent player who has good court vision, Green still needs to work on his quickness and ballhandling.

Green was initially slated to take an official visit to Chapel Hill for Midnight Madness in mid-October, but he’s seen the area on two separate occasions for tournaments and was comfortable enough with the environment to make the decision. Green recently took a trip to Pittsburgh and has visited St. John’s on numerous occasions.

He is ranked No. 43 in the class by TheInsidersHoops’ Dave Telep.
