Edwards chooses UNC -- UPDATED

It's official. Former LSU running back Barrington Edwards will transfer to UNC, <I>Inside Carolina</I> has learned.

"I decided to go with the ‘Blue,'" said Barrington Edwards, who worried many Carolina fans when he suddenly scheduled an official visit to the University of Pittsburgh on Tuesday. "[It all came down to] where I'm going to be the ‘man,' and which coaches could give me the best opportunity to use my talents. They had the faith in me to lead, and be a big impact player on their program. I felt they gave me the best opportunity."

A rules require that Edwards sit out a year, and then he will have three years of eligibility remaining. Edwards says he'll be in Chapel Hill on Sunday.

"We are excited to add a back the caliber of Barrington Edwards," said UNC coach John Bunting. "He already has experienced success at the collegiate level as part of a championship program at LSU. He'll have an opportunity to learn our system this season, and we look forward to seeing him on the field in 2005."

Edwards signed a scholarship agreement Wednesday and is expected to begin practicing with the team on August 24, the first day of classes in Chapel Hill.

Edwards carried the ball 41 times for 169 yards in 2003, good for a 4.1 yards-per-carry average. He also made one reception for the Tigers, who split last year¹s national title with USC.

A native of Bowie, Md., Edwards was a Super Prep All-America at Bowie High School.
