CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Senior guard Nikki Teasley will miss the University of North Carolina women's basketball season opener on Nov. 9 while serving a one-game suspension for a violation of the NCAA's outside competition rule.

Teasley, who took the 2000-01 academic year away from school, played in a recreational game last January that was later found to be in violation of the outside competition rule. The violation was reported to the NCAA by UNC, which voluntarily imposed the one-game penalty upon Teasley.

"The UNC compliance staff went over all the outside competition rules with me, and I knew what was and wasn't allowed," Teasley said. "I started playing in a game I thought was OK, but I realized that it might be against NCAA rules. I took myself out of the game and let UNC know that I had made a mistake. I'm sorry that any of this happened, and I look forward to getting on the court for the team's next game."

UNC opens the season Nov. 9 against George Mason in the Preseason WNIT. If the Tar Heels win, they'll advance to host Evansville or Temple in a second-round game on Nov. 11 at 2 p.m.
