Ryan Schmidt Winston-Salem Journal -

Schmidt is a 6-5, 285-pound senior at Boca Raton High School and is not the player that he was last season. As a junior he stood a shade above 6-2 and weighed 210 pounds.

"North Carolina just got a steal," Coach Rick Swain of Boca Raton said. "He's a real sleeper. He was an average lineman last year but this year he's blowing people away. He's not even close to reaching his full potential." ...

Schmidt is only 17 years old. Swain said that doctors have told Schmidt that he could grow to 6-7 and 325 pounds.

UNC gets commitment from lineman

Fayetteville Observer-

"He fell in love with Carolina,'' Boca Raton coach Rick Swain said. "It was a natural fit when they offered. He's strong academically and this is a perfect fit for him.'' ...

Boca Raton owns a 7-1 record this season in the class 4-A ranks. Nine players on the team have signed with NCAA Division I-A programs last year. Schmidt starts at offensive tackle, but his 4.8-second speed in the 40-yard dash makes him versatile enough to play elsewhere.

"We've considered playing him at tight end,'' Swain said. "If we had a decent tackle we could play there in his place we'd do it. He's going to be begging the Carolina coaches to let him play tight end.''
