Winfield switches from WR to CB

Corey Winfield was a late prize for Syracuse as part of the 2013 class. Now in his redshirt freshman season, he is changing positions in order to get a talented athlete on the field.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Redshirt freshman Corey Winfield was almost a forgotten man among a large group of talented wide receivers. With veterans in front of him and talented youngsters also pushing for time, the Syracuse coaching staff decided to move Winfield to the defensive side of the ball.

”We’re playing Corey Winfield at corner now,” Shafer said. “We decided to move Corey to corner. I think he’s too good of an athlete to be a backup or a backup of a backup. I like his length and he’s got close to a 40-inch vertical jump. I like his athleticism.

"We’ve had good success (moving players). You guys remember Damon Merkerson. We flipped him over and he became a good corner for us.”

The move makes a lot of sense. Syracuse is lacking depth at corner and may be forced to rely on true freshmen to contribute. Winfield gives the Orange another talented athlete in the secondary who coach Shafer views as having a lot of upside.

”I think there’s a day when Corey Winfield will be a very good corner,” Shafer said. “He’s very unselfish, that young man. I hit him on it. He dropped his chin for five or ten minutes.

"He picked up the phone and talked to his uncle and maybe his dad too. Came back in the meeting and was ready to go. I’ve been extremely pleased with his work ethic.”
