South: Fast Five

News and notes on top prospects and storylines out of the South...

  • Tampa (Fla.) Wharton wide receiver Auden Tate is scheduled to commit Tuesday at his high school and he is down to seven schools. Florida State is considered the frontrunner for the four-star, but he lists Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Michigan, and South Florida as schools he is considering. His mind is made up.

  • The University of Florida rebounded last week with commitments from wide receiver/hybrid Kalif Jackson, versatile lineman Mike Horton, and outside linebacker Adonis Thomas. The Gators have seen a few names drop off their commitment list this cycle, but it had a good run last week. Thomas is highest ranked prospect, he is a four-star and the other two are solid three stars on Scout.

  • It has been up and down for North Carolina recently with prospects de-committing and committing. Longtime commit Antonio Williams, a 2016 four-star prospect opened things back up earlier this summer. It is out with one Williams and in with another. Same last name and same position, but different classes with this one. Ty'Son Williams committed to UNC over schools like Georgia, Notre Dame, and South Carolina last week. The Scout 300 running back is a great get for Larry Fedora.

  • Speaking of de-commitments, Rico McGraw decommitted from Georgia and committed to Alabama at the same time late last week. The versatile defensive back out of Tennessee was a UA lean before a surprise commitment to Georgia back in January. This only helped Alabama's lead in the Team Rankings on Scout. The Crimson Tide lead Texas A&M by 700-plus points at this time. Seven of Alabama's 21 commits are in the Scout 100.

  • McGraw's flip was big news, but a little more fresh is Emanuel McGirt opening back up his recruitment. This happened Saturday afternoon and the four-star offensive tackle is looking hard at Georgia and North Carolina State now. He has not eliminated the Tar Heels and LSU is another school in the mix. He has numerous family-connections to Chapel Hill, so this was a tough decision for him. He now plans to take official visits before making his final decision.
