2014 Player Analysis: Matt Goudis

Matt Goudis had a solid sophomore season in 2013 and will look to become one of the league's top kickers in 2014.

As a recruit: Matt Goudis had a strong senior season at Chaminade Madonna College Prep in California. He connected on 12-of-16 field goals with a long of 55 yards. 80-percent of his kickoffs went for touchbacks. He had early offers from schools like Michigan and Boise State and was offered by Miami soon after Al Golden got the job here. He accepted almost immediately after visiting here. Miami was the only school he visited officially.

As a Hurricane: After a redshirt in 2011, Goudis saw action in three games as a backup in 2012. He had a 37-yard punt and had two kickoffs that averaged 55 yards. He took over as Miami's starting kicker in 2013 and turned in a solid season. He connected on 13-of-17 field goals with a long of 49 yards and also made all 57 extra point attempts. He also averaged 64.2 yards on four kickoffs.

What to expect: Goudis is expected to be Miami's field goal kicker and kickoff specialist this coming season. While he competed with walkon Ricky Carroll in the spring for the team's starting punting duties, neither was impressive enough to really win the job. That's why Justin Vogel transferred here to be the team's punter. Goudis has a strong leg with the ability to connect from 50+. He doesn't have the same leg strength as Pat O'Donnell did on kickoffs last year but he should be able to turn in an above average season doing that. Don't expect a ton of touchbacks but he'll pin some offenses back at times.
