State of Florida: Recruiting RBs

Jordan Scarlett

The recruiting trend to early verbal commitment continues across the country, a fine example is the situation in the state of Florida at the running back position. Nine of the top 11 are verbally committed to BCS programs.

It is a terrific year at RB with two prospects ranked in the top 10 nationally and at least two more that are in the discussion. Perhaps the best part of the class is the depth of talent and then the size that comes along with it.

Jordan Scarlett - 5-11, 206 - Fort Lauderdale (Fl) St. Thomas Aquinas

The nation's no. 4 RB shocked the nation with an early verbal to FAU, but has since changed to Miami. Scarlett is physically capable of contributing from day one and has been consistently timed sub 4.5 in the 40. Tools wise he has it all.

Jacques Patrick - 6-1.5, 231 - Orlando (Fl) Timber Creek

The nations no. 8 runner is not committed, but is a strong lean to FSU at this time. Alabama is still in pursuit of this back with a unique blend of size (could arrive north of 235) and speed. Should make an instant impact.

Dexter Williams - 5-11.5, 190 - Winter Garden (Fl) West Orange

Williams, a Miami commitment, is an electric athlete, his combination of 40 inch vertical and 4.08 shuttle are special at his age and the film backs it up. UF and Ohio State are still in pursuit and each should have a chance to change his mind.

Mark Walton - 5-10, 180 - Miami(Fl) Booker T Washington

A Miami commitment, Walton was/is part of the class of 2016, but he is aiming to re-classify to 2015 and word is that he is on track. Jumped on Miami offer, but is clearly looking around (Georgia, Florida, FSU) as the 'Canes have four verbals at this spot. Loaded offense (national champs) has kept his opportunities down, but has produced when called upon and poised for big year.

De'Anfernee McGriff - 6-1, 228 - Tallahassee (Fl) Leon

Auburn commitment. High school QB that put team on shoulders and flat produced. Projected to RB, he could end up at LB or WR as well. Tiger's were able to secure verbal over many suitors and seem like a great fit.

Ray-Ray McCloud - 5-10, 178 - Tampa (Fl) Sickles

Could be listed at WR or CB, he is uncommitted! Well, he will be for another week. A decision is on the horizon with UF, Clemson, and UCLA being the three front-runners. Most believe UF is in the drivers seat.

Jordan Cronkrite - 5-11, 200 - Miami (Fl) Westminster Christian

The 4th Miami verbal commitment, Cronkrite has played and produced on both sides of the ball. Likely to end up at RB where he can be a feature back and carry the load.

T.J. Simmons - 5-11.5, 190 - Lakeland (Fl) Lakeland Christian

Simmons committed to UCLA, but is spending today in Gainesville at Friday Night Lights, if a switch to the Gators is gonna happen, this might be the time. Highly productive at the small school level.

Alex Anderson - 6-0, 185 - Miramar (Fl)

Miramar has sent a number of kids to West Virgnia over the years, notably Geno Smith, Ivan McCartney, and Stedmon Bailey, Anderson is next in line. The question is whether teammates Leeward Brown (Miami commit) and Tyrek Cole (FSU) join him.

James Allen - 6-0, 180 - Citra (Fl) North Marion

Louisville may have a new head coach but the groundwork is in place for future success recruiting wise in Florida, Allen has big play ability. Needs to return to sophomore form.

Taj McGowan - 6'0, 185 - Hallandale (Fl)

Over the past half a decade, UCF has quietly done well in South Florida. UCF needs to keep that pipeline open and McGowan is a terrific start.

Other RBs Committed

Sekai Lindsey, 5-10, 200, Melbourne (Fl) Palm Bay (Pittsburgh)

Karan Higdon, 5-9, 185, Sarasota (Fl) Riverview (South Florida)

Johnnie Hankins, 5-9, 180, Homestead (Fl) South Dade (Northern Colorado)

Michael Fredrick, 5-11, 170, Hialeah (Fl) Champagnat Catholic (UAB)
