UCLA lands Hawaii OL Fred Ulu-Perry

Honolulu (Hawaii) St. Louis offensive lineman Fred Ulu-Perry said UCLA was his top school at The Opening but he wasn't ready to pull the trigger yet. Fast forward a few days and the talented center decided to pull the trigger.

There wasn't a better interior line prospect at The Opening last week than Fred Ulu-Perry. He had a dominant couple of days and it's tough to imagine there being a better center prospect anywhere in the country.

The lineman said he was leaning solidly to UCLA but the only thing holding him back was a desire to take other visits. After an early conversation with Bruin OL Coach Adrian Klemm, that's no longer an issue.

"I just called up coach Mora and Coach Klemm and I committed, I'm a Bruin," Ulu-Perry said. "I just really felt a strong connection with Coach Klemm, we bonded really well. He played at Hawaii so he understands me and knows a lot of the same people I do.

"I love UCLA as a school and the direction the program is going in. They're building something really special and I'm excited to be a part of this recruiting class. I think we're putting together a dominant OL class with Andre James committing and hopefully Dru Samia too, it would be great to play with those guys in college."

As for his taking other visits, Ulu-Perry said the coaches will still allow him to do that.

"Being from Hawaii, I've never seen anything other than UCLA and USC," Ulu-Perry said. "I know no other place could beat out UCLA but I just wanted to enjoy the recruiting experience. I talked to Coach Klemm and he told me they're confident I won't find a better fit for me than UCLA so he said I could still take a couple of trips.

"I want to check out Oregon State, I really like Coach Cavanaugh a lot and I'm thinking about Texas Tech, Washington and Washington State too. I won't visit all of them but those are just the schools I was looking at before I committed. I know UCLA is filling up fast and I didn't want to risk taking my visits first and losing my spot. This is the best of both worlds and I'm just really excited to be a Bruin."

When we talked to Ulu-Perry after the SoCal NIKE Camp in March, USC was actually the leader.

"Yeh I grew up liking USC but I think things worked out the way they were supposed to," Ulu-Perry said. "I camped with them and they said they loved me and wanted to offer but even if they did, I really think UCLA is the best fit for me.

"Early on, I didn't know what I was looking for in a school, I was just looking for who had the biggest name. After talking to the coaches and visiting the two schools, UCLA is definitely where I'm most comfortable. I love the coaching staff and the players on the team and it's going to be excited to be a part of what UCLA is doing right now."
