Clemson's pursuit of Pinckney continues
Grady Jarrett, Josh Watson and DeShawn Williams will exhaust their eligibility after this season. D.J. Reader will be a senior in 2015. Carlos Watkins' final season of college ball could be in 2016, if he opts to stick around that long.
The Clemson staff hopes Pinckney, a rising junior a Whale Branch High School in Seabrook, will choose to compete for a spot in the Tigers' five-man rotation after his prep career comes to a close.
A four-star prospect, according to Scout.com, Pinckney is ranked the No. 25 overall defensive tackle in the class of 2016.
Earlier this month, he spent one day in Clemson for the Dabo Swinney Football Camp.
"It was good. It was good to see coach [Dan] Brooks and coach [Tony] Elliott. It was good to talk to a few players, such as Josh and Grady Jarrett," Pinckney told CUTigers, during a recent interview.
What did the current batch of Clemson defensive tackles share with a guy who could be in their shoes one day?
"Just telling me the things they're doing right now, how they're working out and the sacrifices they make, just telling me if I keep working hard, I can play."
How about Brooks and Elliott, what'd they tell Pinckney?
"They were just making sure I keep focused, to keep working and get better all the time, to make sure that I keep my eyes on the prize."
After Clemson, Pinckney has scheduled trips to UNC and N.C. State. Later in the summer, he hopes to make visits to Florida State, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.
In addition to Clemson, his offer list also includes Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, UNC and South Carolina. There is no list of favorites.
As a sophomore, Pinckney had 91 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, seven sacks, and three blocked kicks.
