Tigers offer DE with ties to the program
Waters is a strength coach at The Bullis School in Potomac, Md., which is home to three-star defensive end Jonathan Holland, who picked up an offer from Clemson on Thursday.
"[Waters] always talks about Clemson and stuff like that," Holland told CUTigers, during an interview later that night.
That's not the only former Clemson standout that Holland has encountered.
"I met some of the Clemson players when they were staying at the hotel the week prior to playing in the Orange Bowl," he said. "I stayed in that same hotel, so I met Sammy Watkins, Tajh Boyd and people like that. I know them vaguely. But, besides that, I know a little bit about Clemson football."
Their offer did catch him off guard.
"Actually, it's interesting. I didn't go to school today, because I was leaving in the middle of the day to go visit [Wake Forest], so I wasn't able to make it to school," Holland said. "A few school stopped by, like Clemson and Notre Dame, and a few other schools.
"One of my coaches actually told me that they had talked to the one of the Clemson coaches and they had offered me and they wanted to see me and tell me."
As of Thursday night's interview, Holland had not spoken with anyone from Tigertown.
"Definitely, I want to go there and visit. It will be a few weeks," he said. "I'll be at Penn State next weekend. Sometime after that, I'll take a visit down to Clemson and see what they're about. It's definitely an offer that I'm very happy and appreciative that I got.
"I want to get down there as soon as possible."
Several other schools have offered Holland, including Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, N.C. State, Penn State, Wake Forest and West Virginia.
He has no favorites, but a set of criteria that will be considered.
"Definitely, from an academic standpoint, I want to go to a school that's great academically, so when my football career is over, I'll have something to do. I plan on majoring in international business, so going to a school that has a strong business program would be something that I will look at," Holland said. "Having a good football program, a program that puts players into position to make it to the next level and a place where I have a good relationship with my position coach."
