Heffernan Seeking Medical Waiver

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Linebacker Tommy Heffernan's UNC career has come to an end due to injury, according to sources close to the situation.

The Miami, Fla. native is in the process of finalizing paperwork for a medical exemption to remain on scholarship as a student.

Head coach Larry Fedora was unable to confirm the news when asked Wednesday after practice.

Heffernan had surgery on his left shoulder last fall that limited him to spot duty in two games in 2013.

He joined the team as a walk-on in 2010 and earned a scholarship the following season. The 2012 season was Heffernan's breakout campaign, as he finished fourth on the team with 73 tackles and 8.5 tackles for loss.
