Bowman Makes Early Pledge to UNC

HAVELOCK, N.C. --- The 2014 season will be the last that brothers Michael and Kyran Bowden share a football field as teammates. During a ceremony at Havelock High School on Thursday morning, Kyran verbally committed to North Carolina, while Michael pledged to South Carolina.

Kyran, a 6-foot-2, 170-pound wide receiver in the 2016 class, made his announcement by donning a UNC hat and adding: "It's a hard decision to make but when you get a good deal with the school you want to go to it's pretty easy. So I'm going to North Carolina."

He selected UNC over scholarship offers from East Carolina and South Carolina.

The Bowman brothers visited UNC for football games against East Carolina and Miami, and then returned to Chapel Hill in February for the junior day, which was held in conjunction with the basketball game against Duke.

The younger Bowman began his prep career as a basketball player at Tampa Bay (Fla.) Christian Academy. Homesickness led him back to Havelock during his freshman year – too late to join its football team.

As a sophomore, Kyran went out for the football team, trying out at quarterback but eventually moving to receiver. In his first game as a starting receiver, Kyran caught a touchdown pass. He finished third on the team with 25 catches for 538 yards and eight touchdowns, and Havelock won its third consecutive NCHSAA 3A Championship.

"He has great potential because this is the first year he's ever played high school football," Havelock head coach Jim Bob Bryant said of Kyran. "He's probably going to be 6-3, 6-4. He's a workout-aholic – he works out hard in the weight room. He's done a great job getting stronger and getting faster. He's a tremendous basketball player, too. He's a great student – smart kid."

Bowman is UNC's second '16 verbal commitment – New London (N.C.) North Stanly running back Antonio Williams was the first – and fourth overall commitment the Tar Heels have received in 11 days.
