UNC sets up in a 2x2 set with tight end Jack Tabb attached to right tackle Jon Heck on its second offensive play from scrimmage, less than a minute into its 80-20 victory over the Monarchs.
Davis lines up off the line of scrimmage to the strong side of the formation (bottom of photo) while running back Romar Morris takes his position off Williams's right hip. Note how ODU's strong safety is only seven yards off the LOS.
Once Williams takes the snap, left guard Caleb Peterson pulls to the strong side of the formation while Tabb engages in run blocking. ODU reads this development as a run play and collapses into the box.
As Morris receives the handoff, ODU has nine defenders within five yards of the LOS. The Monarchs are set up perfectly to defend the run...
... which is exactly what Anderson is banking on. As Morris pitches the ball back to Williams, Davis splits the cornerback and safety, who are still looking run, down the right seam.
This photo sums up the success of the play. All 11 ODU defenders are on UNC's side of the 50-yard line. The only player on ODU's side of the field is Davis.
This photo illustrates the separation between Davis and the ODU secondary.
With a solid pass by Williams, Davis is able to walk into the end zone for the first of UNC's record-setting 80 points.
"We've run it for years a lot of different ways," Anderson said. "We always try to make it look a little different. But with that particular formation, we felt like they were going to get their safeties heavily involved in the run game…
"With ‘Quise being more of a quarterback-run guy, we felt like we could get them in the right defense, so it made sense to go ahead and hit it early and try to set the tempo for how the day was going to go."
