North Carolina (4-1) vs. UAB (5-2)
Birmingham, Ala. -- Bartow Arena
Sunday, 6 p.m.
FS1 (Adam Alexander, Dan Bonner)
“I want him attacking. He’s attacking, at times, at the wrong times. We will work on it. He’s not a true point guard, but he is a true great player, so we will try to help him make good decisions and be the point guard he can.” -- Haase on junior guard Chad Frazier
Season to Date: UAB enters Sunday’s contest with a 5-2 record. The Blazers won their first three games against Columbus State (76-56), Rutgers (79-76) and Troy (81-69) before splitting their last four. Jerod Haase’s squad lost in double overtime to New Mexico (97-94) and dropped an 87-66 decision to Temple while posting double-digit wins over Nebraska (87-74) and Florida A&M (85-73).
Frazier Pacing Blazers: Junior guard Chad Frazier was named Conference USA Player of the Week after being selected to the Charleston Classic All-Tournament Team last week. The Gulf Coast (Fla) CC transfer is averaging 18.4 points on 45.2 percent shooting and 5.3 assists per game. The 6-foot-4, 190-pounder has reached double figures in all seven games this season, including 34 against New Mexico.
Post Help: Junior forward C.J. Washington has provided offensive balance to Frazier’s perimeter scoring with 16.9 points on 58.2 percent shooting and 7.7 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-8, 219-pound transfer from Tallahassee (Fla.) CC led the Blazers in scoring in each of their first three games of the season and added a career-high 28 points in the loss to Temple.
Savvy Senior: 2013 Second-Team All-Conference USA selection Rod Rucker grabbed 20 rebounds in the loss to New Mexico, which represents the third-highest single-game total in school history. Not bad for a forward that stands just 6-foot-5 with a solid 220-pound frame. The NW Florida CC transfer is averaging 12.4 rebounds and 9.9 rebounds per game.
Board Work: It shouldn’t be surprising that Haase, a Roy Williams disciple, has his second team in Birmingham rebounding incredibly well. UAB is currently ranked fourth nationally in total rebounds and leads the conference in rebounding margin (plus-12.7).
Defensive Efficiency: UAB is holding its opponents to 40.9 percent shooting from the floor and 27.6 percent from 3-point range. The Blazers’ effective field goal percentage defense is 46.8 (95th nationally), according to kenpom.com.
Last Meeting: The Tar Heels defeated the Blazers, 102-84, on Dec. 1, 2012. Leslie McDonald scored a career-high 24 points and dished out a career-high five assists as UNC played without starting point guard Marcus Paige. Dexter Strickland added 11 points, a career-high nine assists and four rebounds in the victory.
