A week after de-committing from Notre Dame, Charlotte (N.C.) Catholic running back Elijah Hood committed to UNC on Tuesday evening, InsideCarolina.com has confirmed.

Hood made many visits over the past couple years to Chapel Hill before narrowing his list to Notre Dame and North Carolina this past spring, ultimately deciding on the Irish in April.

Four months later, he's now a Tar Heel.

"Of all the schools, North Carolina has endeared me the most because it feels like home," Hood said in a statement. "As the nation's first State University, the traditions and history of North Carolina make me extremely proud to be born here. The North Carolina community, Coach Fedora and his staff, have done a great job at Chapel Hill and I can only expect better things ahead.

Hood is ranked by Scout.com as the No. 1 prospect in the state, the No. 7 running back in the nation and the nation's No. 51 overall prospect.

"Further, this decision will allow not only my family, but also my community to continue to be a part of me as I grow not only academically and physically, but in faith and maturity as well," Hood said. "This is entirely my decision based on what I view life and football to be about. I am excited to be a part of the Tar heel family and a part of a football program that is already on the verge of great success."

Last season, Hood led the state in rushing with 3,157 yards and 46 touchdowns as Catholic reached the NCHSAA 3AA Title game.

“He’s instinctual, he’s very powerful – he breaks tackles, he has speed – I don’t think he has been caught from behind, and he’s tough,” Charlotte Catholic head football coach Jim Oddo said. “He has everything. ... He’s probably the strongest kid on the team and he’s a good student.”

Hood concluded his sophomore campaign with 1,889 yards and 34 touchdowns on 168 rushes (11.24 average), while Catholic posted a 13-1 record.

In the last seven UNC recruiting classes, this is the third prospect to switch a commitment from Notre Dame to UNC - Gio Bernard did it in 2010 and Greg Little in 2007.
