Huge Commitment: Spain Picks UNC

Bentley Spain surprised the Tar Heel coaching staff on Friday.

The Charlotte (N.C.) Providence star, considered one of the nation's top offensive tackles and the top offensive lineman in the state, arrived unexpectedly on UNC's campus to give the coaches his commitment.

Spain, a consensus, nationally-ranked four-star prospect, chose UNC over a long list of national offers, though ultimately his other finalist was Stanford, which he visited a week ago.

The 6-foot-5, 274-pound standout is also sports a 4.0 grade-point average.

"He understands the game," Providence coach Randy Long said. "He just exemplifies what a great student is. Fundamentally, he works and he's proficient in it. He has great agility, great feet, he's got great strength for a young guy, and he can bend – he has great flexibility. He has all the attributes of a great offensive lineman."

Scout.com ranks Spain as the No. 16 offensive tackle and Top 200 overall. Inside Carolina's Don Callahan ranks Spain the No. 2 prospect in the state.

"Spain has the potential to be a "franchise" left tackle protecting the quarterback's blindside from edge rushers," Callahan wrote in his evaluation. "He has extremely smooth footwork. He sets quickly and displays the body control to adjust to a defender's rush. He's more of a finesse blocker – he'll keep defenders away from the play, but doesn't pile up the pancake blocks. He has the mobility to block defenders on the second level, but will need to be more consistent in hitting them squarely. Specifically, it's very impressive how he improved in a year's time – at the Nike Camp a year ago, he was frequently beaten by opposing linemen, but this past spring he did the dominating and took home the OL MVP Award."
