Stewart, a 6-foot, 175-pound athlete from Arlington (Va.) Yorktown, selected UNC over fellow finalists Michigan State, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia.
By default, Michigan State was eliminated when Stewart's planned visit to East Lansing was canceled. By contrast, he had made countless visits to UNC -- football games, basketball games, junior days, etc.
Furthermore, UNC was one of the first schools to show interest in Stewart.
For Yorktown, Stewart has played cornerback, safety, wide receiver and running back. At his request, Stewart is being projected as a cornerback by UNC.
Stewart is UNC's fifth verbal commitment from the Old Dominion State -- fourth from northern Virginia. He joins fellow Virginia products Malik Carney, Jeremiah Clarke, Caleb Henderson, and Tyler Powell.
Henderson in particular is very close with Stewart. The two played youth sports together and Henderson actively recruited Stewart for UNC.
UNC assistant coach Walt Bell was the primary recruiter for all five aforementioned pledges, plus four others on the Tar Heels' commitment list.
