Stewart Looking to Decide Soon

M.J. Stewart was planning a college declaration for sometime in July. That timetable will likely be accelerated.

"I'm looking to decide soon," Stewart said. "A lot of people have committed and not a lot of cornerback spots are left at my top four schools. I don't have an exact day that I want to make a decision, but I still have to sit down with my father and weigh out the pros and cons of just the top four schools. When we do that, [I'll make a commitment] soon after that. I'm not sure when we'll be able to do that because of his schedule."

Stewart, a 6-foot, 175-pound athlete from Arlington (Va.) Yorktown, has narrowed his focus to Michigan State, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia. He's not leaning in any one direction.

"I'm going to go with my gut feeling," Stewart said. "When I first started, I was looking for a school, I was looking at the social aspect, the football program, and education. And all four schools are good in all three categories."

Stewart was supposed to visit Michigan State this weekend, but that trip is now in jeopardy. If he doesn't travel to East Lansing, it's unlikely he'll take any more visits between now and when he makes his college decision.

The lack of a visit will put the Spartans at a severe disadvantage. He has made at least one visit to the other three members of his final four.

"I couldn't say I'm going there when I don't really know what I'm getting into," Stewart said.

By the same token, Stewart has made countless visits to UNC – football games, basketball games, junior days, etc. The Tar Heels were also one of the first schools to show interest in Stewart.

"I'm not going to say [the fact that they were one of the first to recruit me] is an advantage, but it's always in the back in my mind," Stewart said.

Regardless, Stewart sees a lot of positives with UNC.

"There's not much to not like about it," Stewart said. "It's a good place. If football doesn't work out, it's a good place to get a job. They have a good network down there. They have a bunch of schools down there, but there are three schools in particular – Wake Forest, Duke, North Carolina – that help with jobs down there. It's a great state. Chapel Hill is a great place. The football team, it's on the rise."

Stewart says he communicates "frequently" with Walt Bell, who recruits northern Virginia for UNC. He added that their relationship is more in line with being friends than prospect-recruit.

"It's just cool," Stewart said. "It's kind of like a buddy-buddy relationship."

"Coach Bell's been talking about the VA Squad. He put it on Twitter last night – it was like ‘Who's going to be next to come from VA?'

Bell isn't the only person recruiting Stewart for UNC.

"Man, Caleb [Henderson] has been calling me ever since he committed," Stewart said with a laugh. "Jeremiah [Clarke] called me and hit me up on Twitter. He was just like, ‘Man, you need to go ahead and commit and come down to the VA Squad.' … They have two safety commits that hit me up on Twitter that were asking if I am feeling the school, if I'm liking it.

"There are a lot of people trying to recruit me to North Carolina."

Stewart says he receives attention from representatives of other schools, but it pales in comparison with the attention he receives coming from UNC.
