Three Heels Drafted on Day 2

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The second day of the MLB Draft saw three Tar Heels taken as juniors Kent Emanuel and Brian Holberton were drafted by the Houston Astros and senior Cody Stubbs was selected by the Kansas City Royals.

Emanuel opened the day's festivities as he was taken 74th overall with the first pick of the third round by the Houston Astros. Emanuel owns an 11-3 record on the mound for the Tar Heels with a 2.70 ERA in a career-best 120.0 innings of action. The Woodstock, Ga., native currently owns Carolina junior records for wins (28) and innings pitched (334.2). Emanuel was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 17th round coming out of high school but elected to attend the University of North Carolina.

Senior first baseman Cody Stubbs was drafted in the eight round, 234th overall, by the Kansas City Royals on Friday. Stubbs leads the Tar Heels with a .372 and ranks third in the country with 76 RBIs on the year. The draft selection marks the third time Stubbs has been taken in the MLB Draft, Stubbs was selected in the 29th round (Boston Red Sox) coming out of high school and was later drafted in the 14th round (Washington Nationals) before attending UNC.

Junior catcher/outfielder Brian Holberton became the third Tar Heel drafted on Friday when the Houston Astros grabbed Emanuel's battery mate in the ninth round (257th overall). Holberton is hitting .308 on the year with a career-high 10 home runs for the Tar Heels.

The 2013 MLB Draft marks the first time since 2009 that Carolina has had four players drafted in the opening 10 round as the trio joined Colin Moran who was selected in the first round Thursday night.

Emanuel and Holberton become the seventh and eighth Tar Heels to be drafted by the Astros and the first since Jesse Wierzbicki (24th round) in the 2011 MLB Draft. Stubbs becomes the ninth Tar Heel taken by the Royals and the first since Kyle Snyder (1st round) and Jarrett Shearin (14th round) in the 1999 MLB Draft. Recommended Stories
