Moran Taken Sixth Overall In MLB Draft

Posted Jun 6, 2013

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina junior third baseman Colin Moran was selected sixth overall by the Miami Marlins in the 2013 MLB Draft Thursday night. Moran becomes the 19th Tar Heel to be drafted in the first round and the seventh since 2006.

Moran becomes the first Tar Heel to be drafted in the top 10 picks since Matt Harvey was drafted 10th overall by the New York Mets in 2010. As the sixth overall selection, Moran joins Andrew Miller (2006) as the fifth highest selection in school history.

"It's a thrill to be drafted," Moran said. "It's exciting to take the next step in my career but obviously there is business to take care of this weekend."

The Rye, N.Y., product currently leads the country in RBIs with 86 and ranks third in the country with 60 runs scored for the year.

"He brings so much plate discipline - he doesn't strike out, he walks a ton, he's a line drive gap hitter ... and he'll be very fast to the big leagues," said MLB Network expert, and UNC alum, Peter Gammons. "I kept hearing they were in love with him from their workouts and interviews because he's an extremely intelligent hitter."

Moran and the Tar Heels continue postseason play Friday at 1 p.m. against South Carolina in the NCAA Super Regionals.

North Carolina signee Rob Kaminsky was also drafted in the first round as the left-handed pitcher/outfielder went 28th overall to the St. Louis Cardinals.
