Latta, who played for the WNBA's Tulsa Shock last year in her sixth season in the league, will play for the Washington Mystics this coming season.
Once the contract is approved, Latta will start with the UNC staff on June 1, 2013, when former assistant coach Trisha Stafford-Odom's employment officially ends. Stafford-Odom announced this week that she will take over the head coaching position at Concordia (Calif.).
The second former UNC women's player to have a jersey retired, Latta is a three-time All-American and the leading scorer in Carolina women's basketball history with 2,285 points (16.6 points per game for her career). She holds the ACC record for three-pointers in a career with 345 and was selected National Player of the Year by ESPN.com, Basketball Times and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association in 2006. She also won the Nancy Lieberman Award (awarded to the point guard of the year), ACC Player of the Year, and ACC Tournament MVP. She was the No. 11 pick in the 2007 WNBA draft.
Latta is also the all-time leading scorer in South Carolina high school basketball history (men's and women's) with 4,319 career points.
