The West defeated the East, 92-64 in a sloppy game that featured 33 combined turnovers and 33.5 percent shooting between the two teams.
Diamond DeShields, a 6-foot-2 wing, led the East with 15 points. She also chipped in five rebounds and four steals.
DeShields struggled with her outside shot, shooting just 7-of-20 overall and 1-of-7 from the three point line. However, the Norcross (Ga.) HS product displayed the athleticism that sets her apart from her peers.
She routinely got ahead of the defense for layups and was able to get into the lane with ease. Despite her height, DeShields played up near the rim, demonstrating her elite leaping ability.
“It was a good feeling,” DeShields said. “I’m more proud of the idea of having a recruiting class with three McDonald’s All-American’s and to know that I will be going on to the next level to play with those two girls is pretty exciting.”
Joining DeShields on the East squad was 6-foot-2 forward Stephanie Mavunga. The Brownsburg (Ind.) HS senior shot just 3-of-15 from the field for seven points, but posted a game-high 13 rebounds and six blocks.
Jessica Washington, who won the Skills Competition at the Powerade Jam Fest on Monday, showed her versatility with a well-rounded game. The Jenks (Okla.) HS guard scored six points on 3-of-8 shooting to go along with five rebounds, four assists and three steals for the West team.
“It was good,” Mavunga said. “I got to really see from a good point of view how they play. I’m really excited after seeing that to just be playing with them and with some great players. They’re phenomenal players that we have coming in for our class and even though Allisha [Gray] wasn’t here, I’ve seen her play before.”
If not for an injury, Gray assuredly have joined her three future teammates in this game.
With four players ranked in the top-25 in the country, this class is widely considered tops in the country and the best in Tar Heel history. The quartet will arrive on campus June 17.
“Words can’t even explain,” Mavunga said. “I’m at a loss for words to explain how excited I am.”
