Around the Bases with Trevor Kelley

WILMINGTON, N.C. --- Inside Carolina caught up with sophomore reliever Trevor Kelley following his hometown return in UNC's 10-0 victory over the Seahawks. Kelley has emerged as an important part of the bullpen this year, allowing only four hits in 14.2 innings pitched while holding opposing batters to a .084 average.

So did you lobby Coach Forbes and Fox to get in the game in your hometown tonight after starring for Wilmington Ashley HS?
"No, I am just in the bullpen ready for my name to be called. Up 10-0 we had Chris Munnelly only giving up one hit over 7 innings. It was his day really. We have had a lot of freshmen and young guys stepping up for us. If you want innings you have to get them wherever. Chris Munnelly has been great for us all year and asked to pitch in many situations and he took this start and you see what he did with it."

How have you been enjoying your fireman role coming into the game whenever the other team is threatening?
"It is great. Last year I did not pitch hardly ever. I was up top and dropped down halfway through the season and had a great summer. It is very rewarding after working very hard at it. It wasn't easy. "

Rob Wooten made a similar move a couple years back and became an effective closer, can you discuss the decision and how you were able to change your mechanics so effectively?
"Like I said, I was not pitching at all last year so that kind of discouraged me. We had so many righties that all looked the same really. So I wanted to be a little different and differentiate myself and make this team a little better and give it a better look. One day I started throwing sidearm and this summer the coach helped me a lot and I took it from there."

What has it been like seeing Brian Holberton having a chance to get back behind the plate and the confidence level that the pitchers have in him behind the plate?
"We have to get him out there and he will get a lot better. He has had a hot bat."

What has Coach Gaines brought to the table for the pitching staff?
"He's really relatable to all the guys and graduated three years ago and has a lot of experience with Coach Forbes and how he runs the bullpen. He's down there and tells us to get ready and get going or to take it easy."

Coach Fox just won his 1,200th game as a head coach, but whenever anyone discusses his personal records or achievements he always defers to his players achievements. What does this achievement mean from your perspective?
"It shows a lot about him and what he expects out of us. It is a big accomplishment for him and our University. We are hoping to get a lot more."

UNCW's two biggest crowds during the regular season have been against North Carolina in 2009 and tonight. What is it like to return to your hometown and get a chance to see a big crowd supporting the Tar Heels and the Seahawks?
"That is how it is everywhere we go. A lot of people like to see North Carolina play. It helps being No. 1 to get people out but there were a ton of people here tonight. It is pretty cool to come back and see all those people."

Which player is least looking forward to having their head shaved for VS Cancer?
"Probably Colin Moran or Tate Parrish. It is a good cause that raises a lot of money for people that really need it."
