Jackson, who plays for Houston (Texas) HCYA, chose the Tar Heels over Arizona, Ohio State, Texas A&M, Virginia and Washington.

North Carolina began recruiting Jackson more than two years ago, with assistant coach Steve Robinson leading the recruitment throughout 2011. Roy Williams watched Jackson during last year's spring and summer circuit and offered him a scholarship after those viewings, in August, before making trips to his high school games in December and January and then a return trip for an in-home visit on Jan. 16 of this year.

Jackson's official visit was his third trip to Chapel Hill. He attended the UNC-Duke game on March 5, 2011 and 'Late Night with Roy' on Oct. 12, 2012.

“The strengths of Justin Jackson’s game are his IQ and his ability to hit mid-range jumpers, runners and floaters,” said Tim Schumacher, head coach of Houston Hoops, whose 17-under AAU team has had Jackson since his freshman year. “People labeled him as a shooter, but those are the No. 1 strengths of his game.”

“He’s really developed all of his game, as far as gaining strength, being a better rebounder and better defender. He’s very smart and always in the right spot… always on balance and he plays great position defense. That allows him to be a good defender.”

Jackson was a member of the 2011 USA U16 National Team that won the FIBA Americas Championship gold medal. He is ranked the No. 2 small forward and No. 10 prospect overall in the junior class by Scout.com.

“North Carolina’s system and the way it goes about its business every day – he would fit right in with those guys because of his demeanor, his mindset and his mentality,” Schumacher said. “I think he’s a great fit for them.”

Jackson is UNC's second commitment from the class of 2014, joining Orlando (Fla.) Lake Highland point guard Joel Berry.
