Saturday Expected to Retire as Colt

Veteran center Jeff Saturday, who retired after the Pro Bowl, was released on Monday by the Packers. That clears the way for Saturday to sign a ceremonial one-day contract.

After the Pro Bowl, Green Bay Packers center Jeff Saturday announced his retirement.

On Monday, the Packers did some housecleaning by releasing Saturday, with the decision announced by general manager Ted Thompson. Why? Most likely so he can sign a one-day contract with the Indianapolis Colts so he can retire with the team with which he spent his first 13 seasons in the NFL.

Saturday signed a two-year deal with the Packers as an unrestricted free agent in March 2012 after being the Colts' starting center since 2000. He became a fan favorite, a key figure in the NFL Players Association and one of Peyton Manning's closest friends. In the Pro Bowl, Saturday – who was selected for the NFC team – lined up with the AFC squad for one play to snap the ball to Manning.

Saturday, a six-time Pro Bowl selection in 14 seasons, was benched as a starter with two games left in the regular season in favor of Evan Dietrich-Smith. The Colts declined comment when contacted by Indianapolis Star reporter Mike Chappell.

In a weekend interview with WRTV-6, Saturday said, "(Owner Jim) Irsay was always completely on board with that and had contacted me to do that. It just takes time to get things done.''
