North, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound wide receiver from Charlotte (N.C.) Mallard Creek, had been down to two finalists -- UNC and Tennessee. However, according to multiple sources, North canceled his in-home visit with Larry Fedora and Gunter Brewer, which was scheduled for Thursday, and informed the Tar Heels coaching staff that he is no longer considering UNC.
Tennessee’s potential for playing time has been a major attraction for North, which he expressed in multiple interviews. The Volunteers have lost their top four receivers (Justin Hunter, Cordarrelle Patterson, Zach Rogers, and Mychal Rivera) from 2012 to either graduation or the NFL Draft.
On the other hand, UNC will return freshmen sensation Quinshad Davis, who led the team with 61 receptions for 776 yards and five scores, and welcomes T.J. Thorpe and Reggie Wilkins back from injuries. Additionally, receiver prospects Johnathan Howard (Rochelle (Ga.) Wilcox County) and Ryan Switzer (Charleston (W.Va.) Washington) will sign with the Tar Heels on Wednesday, while fellow incoming freshmen Jordan Fieulleteau has already enrolled at UNC.
To say that the incoming freshmen had productive prep careers would be an understatement. As a senior, Fieulleteau caught 111 passes for 1,669 yards and 24 touchdowns. Howard came 25 yards short of setting the state single season record for receiving yards (115 receptions for 1,630 yards and 17 scores). And Switzer was named Parade All-American after accumulating 2,362 all-purpose yards and 36 all-purpose touchdowns.
