2012 Season Review: ST

2012 Season Review: ST

The 2012 season is over for the Miami Hurricanes so it's time to take a look back at what happened. Today, we break down the play of the safeties.

The Players:

Jake Wieclaw (Sr) -- After a rock solid junior season, Wieclaw was up and down a bit in 2012. He connected on all 42 extra points but hit a mid-season slump on field goals. He ended up hitting 19-of-25 overall.

Dalton Botts (Sr) -- After coming here as a Juco transfer before last season, Botts turned in another solid year in 2012. He averaged 40.5 yards per punt, down a bit from his 2011 average, but he was very good at placing the ball deep into the opponents' territory. He turned in one of the top seasons of any punter in the league.

Phillip Dorsett (So) -- Arguably the fastest player on the entire team, Dorsett was the team's primary punt returner all season and shared kick return duties. He averaged just 5.6 yards per return on 15 tries. On kickoffs, he averaged just over 22. With his speed, you expected him to break more long ones but it never happened -- especially on punts.

Duke Johnson (Fr) -- A five-star recruit in last year's recruiting class, Johnson was a very good running back for the Canes in 2012. However, he was an absolute game-changer as a kick returner. He averaged over 33 yards on 27 returns and scored two touchdowns. He will enter 2013 as one of the nation's best at what he does.

2012 Recap: Despite some midseason struggles, Wieclaw was solid. Botts was very good. Johnson provided a major spark. The team also blocked a few field goals and punts. It was a solid performance from this entire unit in 2012.

Looking ahead to 2013: Wieclaw and Botts are gone. Matt Goudis is expected to take over as the kicker. The next punter remains to be seen. It could end up being a walkon in the 2013 class. Dorsett should be solid but keep an eye on Malcolm Lewis on punts as well. Johnson should be even more electric.
