Top 2014 Prospect Grew Up Loving UNC

Between juggling football practice and homework on Tuesday night, Andrew Brown, one of the top 2014 prospects, snuck in a phone call to North Carolina's coaching staff.

"I talked to Coach [Larry] Fedora and the defensive line coach [Deke Adams]," Brown said. "Basically, the whole concept [of the conversation] was to get me down for a game."

Brown, a 6-foot-5, 270-pound junior defensive tackle from Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith, says the odds of him attending a UNC game this fall are "great."

"I should be able to go there in the next couple of weeks depending on how much schoolwork I have to do over the weekend," Brown said. "Surprisingly, I haven't had a chance to look at their schedule, yet."

Previously, Brown attended UNC's Spring Game in April, as well as a practice.

"When I've been on campus, I've loved it," Brown said. "The girls were pretty, I haven't seen the classrooms yet but I liked what I saw of the campus, and the football team is pretty cool and everybody works hard."

Thirty schools have already offered Brown a scholarship. Thus, by the time it's all said and done, he'll have his pick of the litter with regards to colleges.

In an attempt to make the recruiting process less overwhelming, Brown plans to announce a top five schools list by the end of the football season.

"The important aspects for me are the academic program, the football program definitely, the atmosphere on the campus, whether I like the campus or not – pretty much could I see myself being there," Brown said.

At the very least, UNC figures to be in contention to make Brown's cut to five schools.

"I'm very interested in [UNC]," Brown said. "I'm kind of biased, because I grew up loving them."

Despite living in Virginia, UNC was Brown's favorite school growing up.

"My dad was born in North Carolina and raised in part of it, too," Brown said. "And he has always been a UNC fan, so growing up under that I guess it was hereditary."

Brown attended the Virginia-Penn State game in Charlottesville last Saturday. He has also made unofficial trips to Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech.

Besides his return visit to UNC, Brown would like to take trips to Alabama, Clemson, Florida, and Ohio State at some point during the recruiting process.

During the offseason, Brown transferred from Chesapeake (Va.) Indian River to Oscar Smith. After a loss to nationally ranked Duncan (S.C.) Byrnes, Oscar Smith has improved its record to 1-1 with a 56-0 win Friday. In the victory, Brown, who has been dominant for Oscar Smith on both sides of the ball, recorded 1 ½ sacks plus five pancake blocks.
