The Kenan Football Center's locker room holds 120 lockers for the Tar Heels. With the start of training camp just five days away, UNC will utilize 119 of those 120 lockers.
First-year head coach Larry Fedora has already made changes to player placement in the locker room. The old method of numerical order was replaced with a random selection during summer workouts. Now that training camp has arrived, the equipment staff has been tasked with cleaning out the lockers and reorganizing so that position groups will be together.
This method will allow position coaches to locate their groups easier for communication before or after practices and games.
Assistant equipment manager Jason Freeman welcomed his team of 10 student managers on Saturday at 1pm. Eight-hour days (or longer, if needed) will fill out the rest of the week before the players report.
The equipment staff stripped down each locker and loaded the contents into garbage bags to allow for easy movement to the new locker space.
There is a system in place in order to avoid any confusion with the clothing, toiletries and other valuables of the 119 student-athletes. This detailed blueprint includes numbers associated with players. For most, their numbers are the ones on their jerseys, but overlap requires a 1-119 listing for equipment purposes.
The players are broken down into position groups and assigned lockers based on space. For example, one section included 10 lockers, which provided enough room for all five quarterbacks and five tight ends.

Each locker name plate includes a description of the player's effort level. Those descriptions include, but are not limited to, committed, compliant, compelled, resistant and existent.
The strength and conditioning staff evaluated the entire roster following summer workouts and the labels will remain for the 2012 season. The evaluations occur three times a year -- following the Blue Dawn workouts in February and March, spring practice and summer workouts.
The finished product. The players will find their new locker assignments when they report to camp on Thursday.
